SULAIMANI – Kurdish security forces detained eight Islamic State (ISIS) elements including a high-profile leader in separate raids in Deir Ezzor and Hasakah in northeastern Syria, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said on Tuesday (June 8).
“Al-Bilaliya: a Daesh Security Emir responsible for planning and carrying out assassinations was detained by the SDF,” the SDF tweeted
, noting “The individual was closely linked to the Daesh leadership in DeirEzzor. Support was provided by the International_Coalition.”
Two ISIS members were also arrested in
Deir Ezzor countryside by the local security forces, known as Asayish, who were responsible for recruiting new members and facilitating operations, the SDF said.
Five other ISIS members were also apprehended by
the SDF and Asayish in Jadded Aqidat
in eastern Deir Ezzor, while another ISIS member was nabbed in Tal Hamam south of Hasakah’s Tel Tamer “who was facilitating the transport of people and equipment.”
The US-led Coalition provided air surveillance support during the raids, the SDF reported.
ISIS seized swathes of territories in Iraq and Syria in 2014. The militant group was declared defeated by the SDF in Syria in 2019.
The militant group still poses a threat to stability and security of the retaken areas, especially in Deir Ezzor, through its sleeper cells that carry out hit-and-run attacks, kidnappings and bombings.
The SDF and other Kurdish security forces regularly launch anti-ISIS operations in areas under its jurisdiction, more notably in Deir Ezzor borderlands.
