SULAIMANI – Twenty-four Islamic State (ISIS) militants were apprehended and a cache of weapons and ammunition were seized during a two-day large-scale operation targeting ISIS sleeper cells in Jazirat al-Bouhmaid and the squatter camps in its vicinity east of Deir Ezzor countryside.
The operation was launched on
Sunday at the request of the locals amid increasing acts by the ISIS militants in the region, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said in a statement, noting the Internal Security Forces (ISF) or Asayish took part in the operation.
The operation included more than 53 points including IDPs camp that was exploited by ISIS militants to hide, manufacture IEDs and recruit terrorists, read the statement.
Three ISIS militants arrested who involved in the assassination of Muayyad al-Rayash, the member in Deir Ezzor legislative council, last Wednesday, it said.
A large number of hand grenades, Kalashnikovs, sharp metal weapons, satellite communications equipment, identification papers and diagrams for some “terrorist” operations, as well as various military uniforms and narcotic drugs.
Deir Ezzor is jointly ruled by the SDF-backed Autonomous Administration of North east Syria (AANES) and the Syrian regime, But ISIS militants are active and stage attacks against the security forces and civilian s intermittently.
On May 13, the SDF announced the
arrests of 39 ISIS militants east of Deir Ezzor.
ISIS seized swathes of territories in Iraq and Syria in 2014. The militant group was declared defeated in Iraq in 2017 and 2019 in Syria respectively.
The militant group still pose a threat to stability and security through its sleeper cells carrying out hit-and-run attacks, kidnappings and bombings in both countries.
The SDF and other Kurdish security forces regularly launch anti-ISIS operations in areas under its jurisdiction, especially in Deir Ezzor borderlands.
