SULAIMANI – A Kurdish Kolbar (porter) was shot dead by the Iranian security forces in Sarpol Zahab in Kermanshah province on Wednesday, a watchdog said.

The security forces opened fire at a number of Kolbars in Tang Hamam in Sarpol Zahab, killing a Kolbar, Hengaw Human Rights Organization said, which reports on human rights abuses in Iranian Kurdistan.

The watchdog identified the victim as 28-year-old Qubad Rahmani from Ramk village.

The security forces opened fire at the Kurdish porter without precaution, according to Hengaw.

On May 17, a Kurdish Kolbar was also severely wounded in a direct shooting by the security forces in a border area in Kurdistan province’s Baneh, according to Kurdistan Human Rights Association (KHRA), another watchdog.

Porters, particularly from Iranian Kurdistan, carry heavy loads of contraband on their backs across the western, blaming the high rate of unemployment in Iran’s Kurdish-populated provinces known as Rojhalat, where many of the porters come from.

Working in the smuggling trade on the border between Iran and Kurdistan Region has cost the lives of hundreds of Kurdish porters.

In April, Amnesty international reported that at least 40 Kurdish porters were killed and scores were wounded in shooting by Iranian security forces in Iraq-Iran border areas throughout 2020.
