Former HDP's Diyarbakir mayor receives Clara Zetkin award

SULAIMANI – The imprisoned Kurdish politician Gultan Kisanak was awarded the "Clara Zetkin 2021 Honor Award" given in the name of the Marxist politician, women's rights defender, writer and philosopher in Germany.

Announcing the award on its Twitter accounts, the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Women's Assembly said, “Clara Zetkin 2021 Honor Award was given to Dear Gultan Kisanak. We congratulate her. Together with our women's solidarity inside and outside, we will continue our struggle against the male-dominated order!”

The former mayor of Diyarbakir in southeastern Turkey, Kisanak has been in prison since 2016 serving a jail sentence of 14 years and three months.

Kisanak was arrested in October 2016 and accused of making speeches in support of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

The “Clara Zetkin 2021 Honor Award” has been given biennially in Germany since 2007 and offered by a German party called The Left (Die Linke).
