SULAIMANI – Peshmerga and French forces killed a number of Islamic State (ISIS) militants in an operation launched in retaliation of four slain Kurdish forces, Vice President of the Kurdistan Region said on Wednesday (June 2).

In a 24-hour-long land and air operation in the outskirts of Kifri, a number of ISIS’s residential bases were destroyed and militants were killed from a vast area, Sheikh Jaafar Sheikh Mustafa said.

“The courageous Peshmerga of the Kurdistan Region cleared a vast area of Daesh [ISIS], a number of Daesh terrorists were killed, a number of their residential bases were destroyed, and a large number of weapons and important information were seized,” he said in a statement posted on Facebook.

The Peshmerga suffered no casualties and the operation was carried out by the special Golden Force affiliated with the Peshmerga’s Unit 70 and Brigade 144 under the supervision of the French special forces, added Sheikh Mustafa.

Attacks by ISIS militants are scarce in the Kurdistan Region, but ISIS militants stage hit-and-run attacks intermittently, exploiting security gaps between the Peshmerga and federal security forces in the disputed areas.

Five Peshmerga members were killed and at least two were wounded in the latest two attacks by the militant group in Qayabashi and Omarbli villages near Altun Kupri (Pirde) and Zinana sub-districts.

The disputed areas are a belt of areas stretching from Nineveh through Kirkuk to Diyala provinces, where the Peshmerga forces were expelled Following the 2017 aborted independence referendum that led to the creation of security void between the defense lines of Peshmerga and federal forces.

Iraq declared the fall of the self-styled caliphate of Islamic State (ISIS) in December 2017, but the security remains fragile in the country, except for the territories in the Kurdistan Region.
