SULAIMANI – Spokesperson for the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Minister of Health Aso Hawezi said on Monday (March 1) that some private hospitals had overcharged coronavirus-related patients more than the fees the ministry previously determined.

Hawezi said in a statement that an investigative committee has been formed to make probes into the matter and excessive fees paid by the patients will be returned to them.

The KRG health ministry previously auctioned fees for treatments to COVID-19-related patients at the private hospitals for two times, but allegations have risen in recent months that several private hospitals have flouted the instructions.

Hawezi also brought up an example alleging that 33 patients were overcharged at private hospitals where 116,000 extra fees were taken from the patients.

On August 13, 2020, the ministry said that only one percent of the coronavirus patients have been hospitalized at the private hospitals under respiratory intensive care.

There has been a significant rise in coronavirus cases in the Kurdistan Region following the emergence of new variants of the virus globally.

KRG Minister of Health Saman Barzinji said last week that most of the new cases are the UK strain

On Sunday, The health ministry reported 237 new cases of coronavirus, 83 others recovered and no-one died.

The Region recorded the first coronavirus cases on March 1 and the cases were climbing before declining to just some tens.

The highest daily infections were logged on October 27 with 1,597 cases.

There have officially-logged 108,954 cases in the Kurdistan Region. 103,514 patients have recovered and 3,519 have died from pathogen.

Iraq is also set to receive on Monday the first batch of China’s COVID-19 vaccines developed by Sinopharm, Iraq’s Ministry of Health and Environment announced on Sunday. The Kurdistan Region will receive 5,000 doses as it share according to the health ministry.
