SULAIMANI – More than 400 tents were burned on Friday (June 4) after a massive fire ripped through  Sharia displacement camp in  west of Duhok.

The firefighting teams extinguished the fire but there are fears of new fires due to  the presence of combustible materials such as cooking gas bottles inside the affected tents.

Spokesperson for Duhok Civil Defense Directorate Beewar Abdulazizi told Zhyan News Network that four people were slightly injured and two firefighters suffered shortness of breath.

Several residents in the camp complained the firefighting team's late arrival to the scene.

The camp is situated in Simel district west of Duhok. It hosts 12,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) from the Ezidi community, who were displaced following the war against Islamic State (ISIS).

On May 10,  another fire brought down five stores in the camp without any casualty.

The displaced camps are prone to fires due to poor safety measures.

In February, three people were killed in a fire in Zakho district, northwest of Duhok.
