SULAIMANI – 500 kilograms of hookah tobacco flavors mingled with narcotics were confiscated and five suspects were apprehended by the security forces in cafeterias serving shisha in the Kurdistan Region capital of Erbil's Ankawa on Monday (June 7), an anti-drugs agency said.

The quintet was foreign nationals who had mixed hashish with tobacco flavors, the General Directorate to Combat Narcotics said.

Drug research experts and official have warned of a rise in drug trafficking and use in the Region.

On May 23, a drug dealer was arrested, who possessed more than ninety kilograms of narcotics.

Over half a ton of drugs were confiscated throughout 2020 and 1,133 suspects were arrested on drug-related charges, according to the Kurdistan Region’s General Narcotics Control Directorate.

Due to its nearness to neighboring Iran, the Kurdistan Region has largely become a transit route for narcotics coming from Iran and central Asia to Europe, with limited but growing domestic consumption, according to officials and experts.
