SULAIMANI – Iranian security forces and border guards have killed and wounded 25 Kolbars (Porters) in the first half of 2021 in Baneh border areas, a human rights organization said on Sunday (June 13).

Overall, thirty-three Kolbars have died and wounded by natural disaster or direct gunshots while trekking through rugged frontier mountains to bring goods to Iran and make a living for their family, Hengaw Human Rights Organization said.

Kolbars carry heavy loads of contraband on their backs across the border areas in Iran, Iraq and Turkey, blaming the high rate of unemployment in Rojhalat.

Working in the smuggling trade has cost the lives of hundreds of Kurdish porters.

Iran’s border guards have "unlawfully" shot dead at least 40 Kurdish Kolbars and wounded dozens of others during the year of 2020 in cross-border shootings, Amnesty International said in April.
