SULAIMANI -  Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Minister of Housing and Construction Dana Abdulkarim said on Tuesday (March 2) that a project will be implemented for the construction of a 915 kilometer-long (568.5 miles) rail network worth over one billion US dollar in the Kurdistan Region.

During a news conference, Abdulkarim said that two Spanish and one German companies had been invited to design, assess and survey the project, his media office said in a statement.

“The railway is an important project for the Kurdistan Region, because it will take the Region into a new phase in transportation between the different cities and areas in the Kurdistan Region,” he said.

The project will be finished in three phases that covers 620 km in the first phase, 135 km in the second, and 160 km in the last phase,  the KRG minister said.

It was not clear how the fund will be secured as the cash-strapped KRG is struggling to pay its public sector employees on time and in full for years due to low oil prices, coronavirus pandemic and disputes with the Iraqi Government.
