SULAIMANI – Head of Sulaimani Health Directorate Sabah Hawrami said on Wednesday (June 16) that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has not sent any funding to Hiwa Cancer Hospital for purchasing medicines for six months.
On Wednesday, the hospital staff went back to work after they had gone on strike for two days calling for benefits for working double shifts worth of six months, but to no avail.
Cancer patients also protested lack of crucial medications at the hospital in the same timespan.
“The pharmaceutical companies have stopped to bring medicines to Hiwa Hospital,” Hawrami said.
“There was a patient who sold his car for his cancer treatment, but it was not enough for his medication,” the official said. “Another one paid 20 million Iraqi dinars to buy medicines for just 21 days.”
The hospital is a public medical center located in Sulaimani, dedicated for cancer patients who are in dire need of life-saving treatment in the Kurdistan Region and sometimes hospitalizes patients from other Iraqi provinces.
