Counterterrorism forces arrest 17 ISIS members in Deir Ezzor

SULAIMANI – Seventeen Islamic State (ISIS) militants were arrested and several munitions were confiscated by the counterterrorism forces in a security operation in Deir Ezzor countryside, the pro-Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said.
“With air surveillance by the International Coalition, the Counter-Terrorism Units conducted on Tuesday a sweep operation targeting Daesh sleeper cells in al-Busayrah,” the SDF said in
Seventeen ISIS elements and several weapons, equipment and documents were seized in the operation, read the statement.
ISIS militants and sleeper cells re active in the restive in Deir Ezzor. Part of the province is run by the Syrian regime forces.
“This operation comes under the continuous efforts and operations to enhance security and stability in the north and eastern Syria and to prevent the terrorist sleeper cells from destabilizing the security of the region and threatening the lives of civilians,” the SDF added.
The Kurdish security forces launch intermittent operation in the border areas to hunt down ISIS militants.
On June 9, eight ISIS members were captured by
the security forces in Deir Ezzor and Hasakah in northeastern Syria.
ISIS seized swathes of territories in Iraq and Syria in 2014. The militant group was declared defeated by the SDF in Syria in 2019.
The militant group still poses a threat to stability and security of the retaken areas, especially in Deir Ezzor, through its sleeper cells that carry out hit-and-run attacks, kidnappings and bombings.
