Over 200 kilograms of narcotics seized in 2021 first half in Erbil - report

SULAIMANI – 214.3 kilograms of narcotics were seized and 881 suspects on illegal drug use and trafficking were apprehended by the security forces in the first half of 2021, an anti-drug department said on Saturday (June 26).
315 of those arrested were sentenced by
the courts and others are pending trials in the same time span, the Drug Control Directorate, which is part of Erbil General Asayish Directorate that has authority in Erbil said in its first-half year report.
662.5 kilograms of capsules of illicit drugs and over 40,900 kilograms of hashish-mingled hookah tobacco were also confiscated in the same while, the anti-drug directorate said.
A new anti-drug draft law has been prepared by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and will be sent to the Kurdistan Parliament in the year for reading and enacting, KRG Minister of Health Saman Barnzji said during
a panel titled “Life is more pleasant, let’s be away from the narcotics” in Erbil.
“The draft law differentiates between drug dealers and users,” Barnzji aid.
Drug research experts and official are wary of a rise in drug trafficking and use in the Kurdistan Region.
Due to its nearness to neighboring Iran, the Kurdistan Region has largely become a transit route for narcotics and illicit drugs coming from Iran and central Asia to Europe, with limited but growing domestic consumption.
