Asayish official killed by unknown gunmen west of Deir Ezzor

SULAIMANI – A local security leader was killed by unknown gunmen in al-Hisan town, 20 kilometers west of Deir Ezzor, in northeastern Syria on Saturday (June 27).

Approximately eight unidentified gunmen riding four motorcycles opened fire and killed a leader of the Internal Security Forces (Asayish) in front of his home in the town, according to North Press Agency (NPA). 

Deir Ezzor countryside has witnessed insecurity as Islamic State (ISIS) militants are active and carry out hit-and-run attacks and abductions and plant explosive devices. The Kurdish security forces carry intermittent security operation in the area to hunt down ISIS sleeper cells.  

On Friday, four members of the SDF lost their lives and six others were wounded when an IED exploded in their vehicle in the town of Jazrat al-Milaj, west of Deir ez-Zor.

Deir Ezzor is partly ruin by the Syrian regime.

ISIS seized swathes of territories in Iraq and Syria in 2014. The militant group was territorially defeated by the SDF in Syria in 2019, with the help of the US-led Coalition.
