SULAIMANI – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) said on Wednesday (June 30) that no Israeli intelligence agents were killed in an attack in Erbil the day before and there is no Israeli intelligence office in the Kurdistan Region, in a severe reply to an Iranian hardline daily outlet.

On June 29, Keyhan, considered the most conservative Iranian newspaper, said that three officers of Israel’s the national intelligence agency, known as Mossad, were killed in a rocket attack by “the Iraqi resistance” after targeting an Israeli headquarters in the Kurdistan Region’s capital of Erbil.

The terms "the Iraqi resistance" is used by the Iranian authorities to mean militia groups within the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) aligned with Iran.

Keyhan is believed to be affiliated with Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

“We are rejecting these kinds of baseless news and are announcing this news is not true,” the KRG Department of Media and Information said in a statement. “There are no Israeli bases and headquarters in Kurdistan [Region].”

“The purpose of publishing such news is to sow hatred and strife against the Kurdistan Region,” the statement said, calling on the Iranian authorities to “prevent the publication of such misleading that does not serve the mutual relations.”

The Iranian outlet claimed the Israeli spy agency operatives have been active in the Kurdish capital since the US-led invasion, in 2003, accusing it of “assassinating hundreds of Iraqi elites and scientists in the early years.”

The tit-for-tat statements came in the framework of the recent escalations between the US and Iran-backed militia groups in Iraq and Syria.

This is not the first time the Iranian state media accuse the KRG of complicity in collaborating with Mossad.

On April 14, KRG Spokesperson rejected a claim by Iran’s state-run English-language Press TV  and Sabereen News affiliated with Iran-backed militia groups that a number of Israeli intelligence members were killed and wounded in a rocket attack in Erbil .
