KRG health minister warns of COVID-19 pandemic trending to critical state

SULAIMANI – Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Minister of Health Saman Barznji said on Thursday (July 1) that the COVID-19 pandemic is about to reach a critical phase as cases continue to rise, cautioning people against negligence to the protective measures such as wearing face masks and distancing.

“It is very important people adhere to the health guidelines, because we are about to step into the phase of orange color from yellow color, from moderate to upper,” Barznji said at a news conference. 

“This is a situation coincides with other countries and Iraq. There is a rise telling us that the coronavirus is still present, thus It needs protective measures and prevention from everyone.”

In terms of spread, the COVID-19 pandemic is divided into an alert color-coded system starting from red, orange yellow and to green color, from the most intense to the lowest.

“Unfortunately, many people think coronavirus has completely gone, but we are reiterating that the coronavirus still has presence,” the minister said. “We have not reached the state to discard the face masks.”

On Wednesday, the KRG health ministry registered 723 new coronavirus-related cases, six deaths, and 549 recoveries in the past 24 hours.

Overall, there have been 185,716 officially logged cases since the outset of the pandemic in early March 2020.  Out of that, 173,690 have recovered and 4,477 have died.
