SULAIMANI – 245 Islamic State (ISIS) members were arrested and three were killed in clashes in thirty-four security operation by the Kurdish forces in northeastern Syria in the first half of 2021, the Kurdish-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said on Thursday (July 7).

A tunnel used by the ISIS elements was discovered, a motorcycle was destroyed, and two mines were defused, the SDF said in its first half report of the year, noting a large quantity of ammunition and IEDs were confiscated in the same period.

The SDF is a multi-ethnic force founded in 2014, that fought against the ISIS militants, and recaptured the ISIS-controlled territories with the backing of the US-led Coalition.

The SDF and other Kurdish security forces regularly launch anti-ISIS operations in areas under its jurisdiction, more notably in Deir Ezzor borderlands. Deir Ezzor is partly run by the Syrian regime.

ISIS militants are active in Deir Ezzor countryside, stage attacks against the security forces and civilians intermittently in the province.

“Daesh ended geographically after it was the scourge of the whole world. Otherwise, the struggle against Daesh continues today in a stronger context in conjunction with the historical resistance against Turkish occupation attacks that wants revenge for Daesh from the people of the region,” the SDF said.

Since 2016, Turkey has occupied large swathes of land from the Kurdish forces in three infamous operations with the backing of the Syrian proxies.

The latest was in 2019 when Turkey occupied Tal Abyad (Gire Spi), Ras al-Ain (Sire Knaiye) and a pocket of lands that caused the displacements of more than 360,000 people to the safer area in northeastern Syria.

There have reports of human rights violations such as abductions, lootings, rappings, property seizures and displacements in the Turkish-occupied areas.

The Turkish army and allied Syria proxies have bombed the SDF-controlled Ain Issa countryside and Tal Tamir 206 times in the first half in 2021.

“More than 10 ground attacks that were confronted by our forces and violent clashes erupted to thwart the mercenaries attempts to advance,” read the SDF statement, noting fourteen SDF fighters were also killed in the clashes.

50 Turkish-backed Syrian fighters were killed and 25 were wounded in the attacks, as well as two armored vehicles and two DshK machine guns were destroyed and a large quantity of ammunition was seized, the SDF said.
