SULAIMANI – Co-President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Lahur Sheikh Jangi on Monday (July 12) met with Haider Al-Abadi, the former prime minister of Iraq and Head of the Nasr Bloc in the Iraqi parliament, in Sulaimani and discussed the latest political, economic, and security developments in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

Iraq is to hold an early parliamentary election slated for October 10.

They emphasized the importance of dialogues between the Kurdish and Iraqi political parties to solve the outstanding problems between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Iraqi government.

Sheikh Jangi stressed his party’s position to continue talks and resort to constitution and commitment to bilateral agreements to solve the unresolved problems.

The KRG currently led by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani is at loggerheads with the Iraqi government for years as both sides trade barbs over failures to abide by mutual agreements.

In late March, Iraq passed its belated budget law for 2021 after agreements with the Kurdish authorities, but Baghdad has not yet send any budget share to the Kurdistan Region.

This is the text of the meeting by Sheikh Jangi’s media office:

Today in Slemani I received Haider Al-Abadi, the former Prime Minister of Iraq and Head of the Nasr Bloc. In the meeting, we discussed the latest political, economic, and security developments in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, and the upcoming elections. We stressed the importance of efforts by the Kurdish and Iraqi parties and constructive dialogue in order to reach common visions to solve the outstanding problems, contain challenges, and unify the national ranks on all sensitive and crucial issues that would reduce the problems and differences and maintain security and stability for all citizens of Iraq and Kurdistan Region. We had a common vision on how to deal with all the internal and external conspiracies facing the Kurdistan Region and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, and I extended my gratitude to him for this.

We referred to the outstanding problems between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Federal Government, and as Co-President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, I emphasized the position of my party to continue talks and resort to the constitution and commitment to bilateral agreements to solve the outstanding problems and secure the financial shares of the Kurdistan Region and the salaries of civil servants. We talked about the upcoming elections for the Iraqi parliament and stressed on ensuring free and fair elections to guarantee the success of the process and the implementation of reforms in the country.
