Kurdistan Region logs highest single-day COVID-19 cases in 2021

SULAIMANI – The Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) Ministry of Health said on Monday (July 12) that it had officially recorded the highest-single day COVID-19 cases in the Kurdistan Region in 2021 with 1,368 cases in the past 24 hours.

This was the highest daily record since April 19 with 1,277 cases. 

648 of the cases were recorded in Erbil governorate, 365 in Erbil, 331 in Sulaimani, and 24 Garmian, according to the ministry. 

Four of the coronavirus-related patients died and 797 patients were recovered from the contagious lung disease in the same time span.

There has have been spikes in the COVID-19 cases in the Region and Iraq in recent weeks. Authorities blame the people on lack for adherence to protective measures. 

Overall, there have been 196,073 officially-logged cases. Out of that, 181,472 have recovered and 3,544 have died.

The Kurdistan Region recorded the first coronavirus cases on March 1 last year and the cases were climbing before declining to just few tens.

The highest daily infections were logged on October 27 with 1,597 cases.

The numbers may be an undercount due to limits in tests and not all patients and death are logged.
