SULAIMANI – A 75-year-old man died on Tuesday (July 13) while waiting in a long queue to receive his retirement salary in Sulaimani.
According to Sulaimani Health Directorate, the man identified as Hussein Mohammed Amin had been standing in a queue since early in the morning and had collapsed hours later.
He fainted in the morning and was immediately rushed to hospital, but he died on the road before arriving the hospital.
Despite salary deduction being in place, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has been unable to pay its wage bill on time and public servants need to wait in long queues at salary distribution centers.
Throughout 2020, the KRG missed five months’ worth of salaries to its public servants and paid one in full and slashed others by either eighteen or twenty-one percent citing the COVID-19 pandemic, budget with Baghdad and low oil prices.
