SULAIMANI – A number of truck drivers on Saturday (March 6) blocked Bashmakh border crossing between Iran and the Kurdistan Region to protest newly imposed rules.

“The decisions which prevent us from loading goods are improper, that is why we blocked the road,” a protesting truck driver told Zhyan News Network.

Starting in early March, Bashmakh border officials imposed restrictions on the import of some specific goods from Sairanban and Tawella border points to the Kurdistan Region.

Restrictions and alleged “lack of proper permits” at Bashmakh border crossing led to closure of Sulaimani’s fruit and vegetables market on March 4 by frustrated vendors.

Drivers from Sairanban and Bashmakh border posts, who have been protesting for the past five days, accuse each other of illegally importing and exporting fruits and vegetables.

They asked Sulaimani Provincial Council to resolve their issues which have been ongoing since March.
