SULAIMANI – Co-President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Lahur Sheikh Jangi said on Thursday (July 15) that he would do everything to preserve the party, amid intra-PUK tensions with his counterpart Bafel Talabani, hours before the party's Politburo met to resolve the tensions.
Sheikh Jangi’s statement came after he “met with a large number of the esteemed families of our martyrs, and I thank them for their enthusiasm and loyalty for protecting the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK),” he said.
“I reaffirmed my promise that we will do everything we can to protect the PUK, which is the product of the blood of martyrs and that we have done so thus far.”
His statement came amid his tensions with his counterpart Talabani after the latter replaced senior officials within the intelligence and counterterrorism agencies with his loyalists. The security forces also raided a media outlet affiliated with Sheikh Jangi, closed the TV channel and handed over its building to Gali Kurdistan TV channel on Tuesday evening.
Three other media outlets — Zhyan News Network, Chaw, and Ajans- were also told by the security force to shutter
their gates, reported by Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) citing local sources.
The security forces drove in four cars to the Zhyan office, hours after the raid on iPLUS, but all the staff had left before they arrived.
“I reiterate that the PUK is a party of its loyal members, cadres and supporters, and that the future will be for the PUK and it will always remain at the top for as long as the PUK has this loyal and caring base,” Sheikh Jangi added.
On Thursday night, the PUK Politburo met and issued several decisions to mitigate the
tensions with the participation of both co-presidents.
Sheikh Jangi is also the head of the joint electoral list between the PUK and the Change Movement (Gorran) for the Iraqi upcoming early elections slated for October 10.
