Kurd shot dead in racist attack in Turkey's Konya

SULAIMANI – An ethnic Kurdish man was killed in a racist armed attack by dozens of Turks in Çarıklıköy region in Meram district of Konya province on Wednesday (July 21), a local news agency said, the third such attack in the past few hours.

A group of 60 people from adjacent Karahüyük village opened fire at a Kurdish family who have been living in Çarıklıköy for the last 20 years, Mesopotamya Agency (MA) reported, noting Hakim Dal, 43, was killed in the shooting as a result.

The deceased man’s brother Hamdi Dal said they were attacked because they were Kurdish, the MA reported

"They didn't want us there because we are Kurdish. They perpetually threatened us and told that we should leave the village. The people living in the neighboring villages also pressured us and wanted us gone,” he said. 

“We were grazing animals when a discussion broke out. We were three people. They came with at least 60. They were armed. They attacked us and insulted us because we are Kurdish. My brother lost his life as a result of the attack,” he added.

A witness, Mehmet Emin, said that the Kurdish family was annoyed several times by the attackers before.

“They make their living from animal husbandry. They have been living here for a long time. They were attacked at least three times before,” Emin said, saying the village’s headman was the “instigator of the attack.”

“He has been provoking the villagers against this Kurdish family. He is detained now. There is no one else under custody though."

On the same day, four Kurds of the same family were also injured in an armed attack with a Turkish family in Altındağ district of Ankara, as the former was sacrificing an animal for the Eid al-Adha. 

"At least 150 people attacked us. 4 of them fired their guns against us. 4 of my brothers were injured. They were full of hatred. It wouldn't be enough for them to kill all Kurds,” Ferhat Bzotas, from the Kurdish family, said.

On July 12, another Kurdish family was subjected to another racist attack in Meram, with the attackers telling the Kurdish family that they are greywolves, a Turkish infamous nationalist group, threatening the Kurdish family they would not let them to live there, injuring seven people including four women.

On Monday, seven Kurdish workers were injured in another racist attack by a Turkish mob in Dereçine village in the western province of Afyonkarahisar for speaking in their mother tongue.

Earlier this month, a Kurdish married couple from the Iranian Kurdistan, Rojhalat, were subjected to beating by a restaurant owner in Turkey.

On May 12, seven members of a same family were injured in a brutal racist attack by about 60 Turkish assailants in Konya province. 

On May 13, a man and his son from the Kurdistan Region’s capital Erbil was attacked by a Turkish angry mob in Bozyazi district in Mersin.

In 2019, a group of Tourists from the Kurdistan Region were assaulted by a Turkish racist mob in Trabzon as they carrying a Kurdistan flag scarf and taking photos.
