SULAIMANI – Seven Kurdish political parties from Turkey’s southeastern province of Diyarbakir met on Friday (March 12) encouraging “unity” among other Kurdish parties in Iraq, Syria and Iran.

The Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) co-chair Pervin Buldan met the members and representatives of the Democratic Society Congress (DTK), Democratic Regions Party (DBP), Kurdistan Communist Party (KKP), Human and Freedom Party (PIA), Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), Free Party (Partiya Azadi) and the Free Women's Movement (TJA).

“All of the political structures in four parts of Kurdistan are considered as one. The Kurds need to be one. However, we are not united. That is why the most important message of the 2021 Newroz is the Kurdish national unity,” KKP chairperson Sinan Ciftyurek said.

The parties – known collectively as Kurdistani Coalition – also discussed their plans for this year’s Newroz celebrations to mark the Kurdish New Year.

“This Newroz will be the beginning of the freedom of the Kurdish people. It will also bring the unity of Kurds,” Democratic Regions Party (BDP) co-chair Keskin Bayindir told reporters.

The Kurdish parties also called for an end to years-long isolation of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) founder Abdullah Ocalan and demanded he receive regular access to family and lawyers.

Since his detention by Turkish special forces in Kenya in 1999, Ocalan has been held in an island prison. He is revered among many Kurdish supporters of the HDP, founded in 2012.

"If Mr. Ocalan's declaration had been taken into account, things would be different in Turkey and the Middle East," Buldan was cited by ANF News as saying.

"The people of Turkey seek social peace which, however, cannot be achieved through a denial of the Kurds or an imposition of bans on the language, identity and culture of the Kurds. We can only achieve true peace and democracy by respecting and acknowledging each other's identities, languages and cultures. Justice, equality, freedom and democracy will definitely be realized.”
