SULAIMANI – Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi on Sunday (March 21) spoke by phone with Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and conveyed his congratulatory Newroz message following a collapse of negotiations between Erbil and Baghdad.

“Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Kadhimi conveyed his best wishes on Newroz to Kurdistan President Nechirvan Barzani and the people of Kurdistan, in a phone call with President Barzani today.],” Barzani’s media office tweeted.

“Prime Minister al-Kadhimi expressed his hope that it would be a safe holiday and a new year full of success and happiness for His Excellency and the people of Kurdistan,” read a statement from the media office, noting Barzani “thanked Prime Minister Al-Kazemi for his contact, hoping for safety and stability, resolving problems and overcoming the crises of Iraq.”

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Government of Iraq have been in long-running talks for months to reach an agreement about the former’s budgetary obligations to the latter’s budgetary duties.

On Saturday, attempts to pass the long-waited 2021 Federal Budget Law collapsed amid rows between the lawmakers in the Iraqi parliament and a fall in negotiations between the KRG delegation and the Shia blocs.

After several postponements, a vote on the draft law has been delayed to March 27.
