SULAIMANI – Three wanted people were arrested by Iraqi and Kurdish security forces in Sulaimani over “terrorism charges.”

The Iraqi defense ministry said in a statement on Wednesday (March 24) that whereabouts of the detainees was raided as a result of high and meticulous coordination between the Kurdish and Iraqi security forces.

“The three were present in Sulaimani. They were thinking they would be far from the eyes of the security forces, but the joint coordination resulted in their arrest and they were handed over to the judiciary to receive their fair penalty,” it added.

Iraqi and Kurdish security forces have increased their cooperation in the fight against Islamic State fearing a spike in terrorist attacks in Iraq.

Iraq’s Counterterrorism Service (ICTS) arrested eight ISIS elements in several governorates in Iraq, including two in the Kurdistan Region’s Halabja governorate.

Spokesperson for the Commander-in-Chief of Iraq’s federal Armed Forces Yehia Rasool tweeted that two other ISIS militants were arrested by a ICTS regiment in Halabja, while two others in Saladin’s Makhmour and al-Shirqat, who participated in attacks against the security forces.

Four others were also arrested including an ISIS leader dubbed Aby Yasser, according to federal the counterterrorism agency.

Iraq declared the fall of the self-styled caliphate of Islamic State (ISIS) militants in December 2017, but the security is fragile in the country, especially in the disputed territories claimed by Erbil and Baghdad.
