Former KRG PM for third cabinet dies aged 74

SULAIMANI – Former Prime Minister of the third cabinet of Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Rozh Nuri Shaways, who led his party Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) to a victory in 1992, passed away on Monday (February 15) aged 74.
KDP officials confirmed Shaways has passed away due to illness. He was diagnosed with a long-term disease and had frequently been sent abroad for treatment.
Shaways was an active member of KDP politburo served as the Deputy Prime Minister in the first KRG cabinet and as Prime Minister in the third cabinet.
Between 1999 and 2003 he was the speaker of the Kurdistan Parliament and in 2004 after the US invasion of Iraq he was elected as the Deputy Prime Minister of the Iraqi government.
In October 2020, Shaways’s media office denied reports that he was diagnosed with COVID-19.
