Kurdistan Region receives 43,800 AstraZeneca vaccine doses

SULAIMANI [Kurdistan Region] – 43,800 doses of British-Swedish AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine arrived in the Kurdistan Region’s capital Erbil late on Thursday (March 25) as share from Iraq’s 336,000 doses.
“I’m pleased to announce the arrival of a new batch of 43,800 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine from Baghdad today,” Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani tweeted.
On Friday, the federal government received
the AstraZeneca jabs
through COVAX, a global initiative created to ensure that low- and middle-income countries have fair access to vaccines.
Following some instances of blood clots after administering AstraZeneca doses, some European and Asian countries and Australia have halted the use of the vaccine in fear of blood clots, but the World Health Organization (WHO) and European regulators have assured the Oxford-manufactured vaccine causes no adverse effect.
Healthcare workers, security forces, the elderly and the chronically ill are prioritized to receive the first doses in the Kurdistan Region.
On March 2, China donated 50,000 doses
of Chinse state-manufactured Sinopharm vaccine to Iraq and 5,000 were given to the Kurdistan Region. Iraq is also set to receive he Russian-made Sputnik vaccine in the coming week.
In December 2020, Iraq inked a deal with US multinational pharmaceutical corporation Pfizer for 1.5 million doses of its vaccine.
On Thursday, Iraq’s Minister of Health and Environment Hassan al-Tamimi said that the country is supposed to receive a total of 16 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines.
There has have been spikes in the COVID-19 cases in the Region and Iraq following the emergence of new strains of the pathogen globally, especially the UK and South African variants.
On Thursday, the Kurdistan Region’s health ministry logged 601 new coronavirus cases, five new deaths and 222 recoveries over the past 24 hours. Overall, there have been 117,412 officially-logged cases in the Region. Out of that, 107,640 have recovered and 3,622 have died.
Meanwhile, Iraq recorded 6,513 cases, 4,781 recoveries and 33 deaths in 24 hours. Overall, there have been 815,605 cases, 732,252 recoveries and 14,128 deaths in Iraq since the pandemic spread in the country.
