SULAIMANI – A Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) senior member said on Saturday (March 28) that his party has understanding with all the Iraqi political parties but singled out the Sadrist Movement citing the latter’s organizational stability, historical ties and tendencies to recognize each other’s senior leaders.

“The KDP has understating with all the parties at the level of Iraq, but we have more closeness with the Sadrists, because the KDP is close to the Sadrists in many aspects, including they have an organizational stability, likewise we have,” member of the KDP Political Bureaue Jaffar Eminki told his party’s main media outlet.

“They have their own Marjaa, and the KDP has its own Marjaa that lends more credibility to meet with them. Baghdad is an open arena for all the political parties including the KDP,” he said.

Marjaa, literally means source to imitate/follow or religious reference, refers to the highest level in Shia authority to make legal decisions within the confines of Islamic law for followers and less-credentialed clerics.

The KDP uses the term broadly to mean its leader Masoud Barzani and appeals to the Iraqi political parties to recognize him as the highest Kurdish leader.

On March 23, Change Movement (Gorran) lawmaker Hoshyar Abdulla said that the KDP and the Sadrists have asked the other to recognize their Barzani as the Kurds’ marjaa, so that the KDP will recognize Muqtada al-Sadr as Marjaa for the Shia blocs reciprocally.

Eminki also said that his party has taken good steps with National Wisdom Movement and has understandings with most of the Sunni parties.
