SULAIMANI – Two members of the Party of Free Life of Kurdistan (PJAK) were killed in Sulaimani’s Penjwen district in a botched murder-for-hire plot by the Iranian government, the Kurdish-armed group said on Sunday (March 28).

PJAK, which operates in the mountains of the Kurdistan Region and adjacent areas of Iran, identified the victims as Zagros Mani and Shawgar Chya saying they were killed while on duty in Penjwen’s Cham Shiler area.

According to PJAK, “the assassinations” were carried out on February 4 by two people who “were hired by Iran” after their visit to meet members of the armed group, including Chya and Mani, according to Roj News, a news agency close to PJAK.

“Our comrades, Zagros Mani and Shawgar Chya were martyred inhumanly and brutally,” PJAK said in a statement.

“The incident again indicated the inhuman and immoral face of the occupation republic of Iran,” it added, expressing condolences to the families of the victims.

PJAK is considers as the Iranian Kurdistan wing of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

Tensions between the Kurdish opposition armed forces and Iranian forces have increased after a show of force by a number of Iranian Peshmerga forces in the streets of the northwestern Kurdish town of Shino.

Locals expressed worries that the deployment of the forces to show strength in the urban areas of the Kurdish-populated towns and cities, which was first of its kind in about 20 years, may lead to “intense” fighting between the Peshmerga and Iranian military forces.
