Woman shot dead at government office in Erbil

SULAIMANI – A man shot dead a woman both public sector employees at the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Ministry of Electricity in Erbil on Monday (March 29).
The man opened fire at the woman at 10:18 am when she received her salary and entered government office’s parking lot.
The KRG Minister of Electricity identified the victim as Engineer
Shadia Abdulla and said the shooter was arrested by the ministry’s guards.
Zhyan News Network has learned that the man previously proposed to the woman but she refused it and get married to someone else.
Hogr Aziz, Spokesperson for Erbil Police Directorate, attributed the motive behind the shooting as social problem, a term authorities use to imply domestic violence.
Aziz said that the shooter has been arrested and under interrogation for the time being.
Gender-based valence against women is rife in the Kurdistan Region in spite of promises by the authority to curb it, but to no avails.
At least 25 women were murdered, 38 others committed suicide, 67 self-immolated, 10,370 lawsuits were lodged and 125 sexual assaults were logged in 2020, according to General Directorate to Combat Violence Against Women.
The numbers may be an undercount as not all violence get reported .
