SULAIMANI – Members of the Kurdistan Parliament’s Human Rights Committee on Thursday (April 1) will visit Badinan detainees, who are serving a six-year prison sentence, said the parliament presidency.

The planned visit by the committee members comes after it was proposed by a number of lawmakers and amid concerns over the detainees’ health situation.

Earlier on Tuesday (March 30) a lawyer expressed worries that Badinan detainees from an Erbil prison are in grave danger as their health deteriorates after weeks of hunger strike.

Badinan detainees, who are serving a six-year prison sentence, have been prevented to meet their lawyers and families, attorney Bashdar Hasan told Zhyan News Network.

“A special source told me that health condition of the detainees is very bad. We went to meet them, but were were not allowed,” Hasan said.

On February 16, Sherwan Sherwani, Shvan Saeed, Guhdar Zebari, Hariwan Issa and Ayaz Karam were sentenced to six years in prison after being convicted by Branch 2 of Erbil’s Criminal Court.

The court convicted the five for “taking pictures of forbidden places", "releasing information about the movement of the security forces”, and “receiving money from outside the Kurdistan Region for exchanging information about the security agencies.”

The crackdown and the trial have sparked condemnations from local and international organizations and advocacy groups.
