SULAIMANI – At least three ethnic Kurdish inmates were executed in the Urmia Central Prison in West Azerbaijan province in the Iranian Kurdistan on Sunday (April 4) and three others are on death row, according to a watchdog.
Six inmates previously sentenced to death on charges of narcotic trafficking were transferred to solitary confinement
on Saturday, Hengaw Organization for Human Rights reported.
Hengaw identified the hanged as
Ahad Habibvand and Sadegh Mohemi from Urmia and Mohammad Karim Mahmoudi from Oshnaviyeh.
59 ethnic Kurds were executed in Iran throughout 2020, including four of whom were convicted of political offenses, according to Hengaw.
Fifty-one others were sentenced to death for “premeditated murder.”
Iran executed at least 280
prisoners during 2020, according to a joint report by the Paris-based Together Against the Death Penalty (ECPM) and Iran Human Rights (IHR) published on March 31.
Iran ranked second after China in executing most people, according to Amnesty International.
