SULAIMANI – Fears of imminent secret execution mount for 12 Kurdish women in Iran over “murder,” an Iranian Kurdish rights watchdog reported on Monday (April 5).

“According to an investigation conducted by Hengaw Human Rights Organization, 12 women are currently being held in women's ward of Urmia Central Prison on charges of premeditated murder,” Hengaw Human Rights Organization said.

Iran ranked second after China in executing most people, according to Amnesty International.

At least three ethnic Kurdish inmates were executed in the Urmia Central Prison in West Azerbaijan province in the Iranian Kurdistan on Sunday (April 4) and three others are on death row.

Six inmates previously sentenced to death on charges of narcotic trafficking were transferred to solitary confinement on Saturday, Hengaw Organization for Human Rights reported.

59 ethnic Kurds were executed in Iran throughout 2020, including four of whom were convicted of political offenses, according to Hengaw. Fifty-one others were sentenced to death for “premeditated murder.”

Iran has executed at least 280 prisoners during 2020, according to a joint report by the Paris-based Together Against the Death Penalty (ECPM) and Iran Human Rights (IHR) published on March 31.
