SULAIMANI – A person was killed and two others were wounded in an armed fight between two families in Shorsh sub-district west of Sulaimani on Monday (April 5), the Sulaimani Police Directorate said in a statement.
Six suspects were apprehended in connection to the skirmish and a number of weapons and a Nissan Patrol vehicles were also seized during a raid by police in coordination with Asayish (security) forces following the fight, said the statement.
“All the suspected have been detained in accordance with judge’s order and investigations is ongoing with them,” added the statement.
Spokesperson for the police directorate Sarkawt Ahmad described the motive behind the incident as a “social problem,” a term is often used by the security forces to mean domestic violence and other types of violence not ascribed to extremist and terrorist groups.
On February 10, 2019, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) gave gun owners six months to log their unregistered or illicit small firearms and called on people to hand over their medium and heavy weaponry.
