Moderate earthquake hits areas in Kurdistan Region, Iran

SULAIMANI – A moderate 5.3 magnitude earthquake were felt in parts in the border areas in the Kurdistan Region and Iran around 06:12 pm local time, according to the USGC, according to the United States Geology Survey (USGS).

The jolt was at the depth of 8.3 kilometers northeast of the town, according to the USGS.

Kurdistan Region General Meteorology and Seismology Directorate put the magnitude at 5.4 Richter scale with a distance of 9.5 km from Penjwen.

The quake was felt in Sulaimani, Penjwen and several areas in the Kurdistan Region and Baneh, Sanandaj, Mahabad, Bokan, Saqqez and Baneh in Iran's Iranian Kurdistan. 

Photos circulated on social media showing damaged places in Penjwen, more notably at a hospital as there were no reported casualties

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported that the quake was at 5.2 magnitude at the depth of 10 kilometers with an epicenter just southeast of Marivan in Iran’s Kurdistan Province.

Iran and Iraq are crisscrossed by fault lines, making earthquakes a common occurrence.
