SULAIMANI – A group of five alleged “terrorists” have been arrested by Kurdish security forces in Erbil, the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) announced on Monday (April 12).

KRSC released the confessions of five suspects who allegedly belong to the Islamic State (ISIS) militant group and planned terrorist attacks in Erbil.

KRSC said it had followed a terror cell which had received orders from the ISIS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurashi.

The suspects had plans to use Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) and silent weapons in their terror attack, the KRSC said.

Kurdish security forces in February foiled an attempt by the five men to sneak into the Kurdistan Region, the KRCS added. They were “smuggled” out of Syria and transferred to Turkey and then to Iran, where they reached the Kurdistan Region.

Iraqi and Kurdish security forces have increased their cooperation in the fight against Islamic State fearing a spike in terrorist attacks in Iraq.

Iraqi defense ministry said in a statement on Wednesday (March 24) that three wanted people were arrested by Iraqi and Kurdish security forces in Sulaimani over “terrorism charges.”

Iraq declared the fall of the self-styled caliphate of Islamic State (ISIS) militants in December 2017, but the security is fragile in the country, especially in the disputed territories claimed by Erbil and Baghdad.
