SULAIMANI – Iraqi President Barham Salih on Monday (April 19) highlighted somber cooperation between the country’s electoral commission with the UN in the upcoming early parliamentary election scheduled for October 10.

Salih’s statement came during a phone call with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday and discussed recent developments in politics, and in security-related matters in Iraq, his media office said in a statement.

“There should be serious work and effective coordination between the UN and the Independent High Electoral Commission of Iraq (IHEC) to ensure monitoring and the oversight of the elections and to make sure that the ballot process was conducted freely and fairly,” Salih said.

“We can ensure a large turn-out at the elections so that voters could freely express their will to choose their representatives in the next Iraqi Parliament, thereby guaranteeing Iraq's sovereignty and respecting the Iraqi independent decision,”

Iraq’s early parliamentary was supposed to take place on June 6 but it was postponed several times by the federal government and now it is now slated for October 10.

The trio also agreed upon that “Iraq's stability and its sovereignty contributes is a significant factor to establish regional security and to achieve peoples' interests.” read the statement.
