SULAIMANI – The Kurdistan Parliament on Wednesday (April 21) voted unanimously to mark April 22 as the Kurdish Journalism Day, 139 years after the first Kurdish language newspaper was published in exile.
April 22 coincides with the publication date of the first Kurdish newspaper in Qairo in 1989, Kurdistan, by Mikdad Midhad Bedir Khan. In four years, 31 publications were printed in Cairo, Geneva, London and Folkestone.
The day was previously remembered as the Kurdish journalism day before the Kurdish legislature made it official on Wednesday.
The Kurdish authorities have come under harsh criticism by local and international journalism watchdogs for the deteriorating state of the press.
