SULAIMANI – Clashes continued between the pro-Kurdish Internal Security Forces (Asayish) and pro-Syrian government National Defense Forces (NDF) in al-Tai and Hiko neighborhoods in Qamishli on Friday (April 23).

Medium and light weapons were used by Asayish and the pro-Syrian government militia group as the latter intensified their targeting of civilian residential buildings surrounding al-Wehda roundabout in the city center, according to North Press Agency (NPA) affiliated with the Autonomous Administration of North East Syria (AANES).

The pro-Syrian government militia group brought in their forces in south of Qamishli to attack Asayish bases east of the neighborhood, according to NPA.

UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that the Asayish forces managed to advance into several areas in the two neighborhoods.

At least three people including an Asayish member have been killed in the clashes since Tuesday. The SOHR reported that five NDF members were killed and six others were wounded on Tuesday clashes.

On Thursday night, Sheikh Hayyes al-Jaryyan, a prominent figure of the Bani Saba’a tribe succumbed to his wounds after he was sniped by the NDF near his home northeast of the National Hospital.

On Wednesday, Member of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) Presidential Body Salih Muslim described the attacks by the pro-Syrian government militia as a game by Damascus and Moscow to strike stability in favor of the government’s popularity for upcoming election.

Qamishli outskirts are run by the the Kurdish-run AANES, but the Syrian government has a relatively small number of offices within the city, especially through the pro-regime militia in Hasakah and Qamishli cities.
