SULAIMANI – A ceasefire was reached on Sunday (April 25) between the Kurdish security forces and a pro-Syrian government militia group to end days of armed clashes in Qamishli in northeastern Syria, said the pro-Kurdish Internal Security Forces (Asayish) in a statement.

Since Tuesday, Asayish forces and pro-Syrian government National Defense Forces (NDF) militia group have clashed in the Kurdish-majority city, more notably in al-Tay, claiming several lives.

“With the guarantee of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Russian forces, a permanent truce was reached if no violations of the National Defense Militia appeared towards our forces,” Asayish said.

“The residents of Tayy neighborhood who left their homes due to the escalation carried out by the militia, and all those who wish to return to their homes can review our security points to secure their entry and ensure the safety of their properties tomorrow, Monday, April 26.”

The Kurdish forces have largely distanced confrontation with the Syrian regime amid decades of civil war in Syria, but clashes occasionally happen between them in Qamishli and hasakah where there are relatively small offices of the regime.

Qamishli outskirts are run by the Kurdish-run Autonomous Administration of North East Syria (AANES), but the Syrian government has a relatively small number of offices within the city, especially through the pro-regime militia in Hasakah and Qamishli cities.

The NDF is a paramilitary force that has been active in the Syrian conflict. Several of its commanders have been sanctioned by the United States for their role in persecuting civilians in the war-ravaged country.
