Kurdistan Region passes 150,000 COVID-19 cases since outbreak

SULAIMANI - The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Ministry of Health said on Thursday (April 29) it had officially recorded 867 new coronavirus cases in the Kurdistan Region in the past 24 hours. 

321 of the cases were recorded in Duhok governorate, 279 in Sulaimani, 193 in Erbil, 57 in Garmian administration, twelve in Halabja and eight in Raparin. 

Eleven of the coronavirus-related patients died of the contagious lung disease and 907 patients recovered in the same period. 

There has have been spikes in the COVID-19 cases in the Region and Iraq following the emergence of new strains of the pathogen globally, especially the UK and South African variants.

The health officials have fostered the people to vaccinate to against the COVID-19.

Overall, there have been 150,008 officially-logged cases since the beginning of the outbreak in the Region. Out of that, 126,508 have recovered and 4,165 have died.

The Kurdistan Region recorded the first coronavirus cases on March 1 last year and the cases were climbing before declining to just few tens.

The highest daily infections were logged on October 27 with 1,597 cases.

The numbers may be an undercount due to limits in testing and not all patients and death are logged.
