Ring arrested in Erbil accused of human trafficking, extortion: police

SULAIMANI – Spokesperson for the Erbil Police Directorate Hogr Aziz said on Sunday (May 2) that “a criminal ring” including three members and a ringleader was arrested in Erbil in the past while.
The gang was accused of blackmailing and abducting people from Baghdad city, Azizi said at a news conference.
“This [criminal] ring had kidnapped infants and women by force. They had introduced themselves that they are senior officials and tribal chief in Baghdad but it turned out they were not,” he said. “Our forces boldly arrested them because they were criminals.”
The ringleader was arrested on
Friday after three other members were previously arrested, he said, noting they were detained in accordance with article 444 of the Iraqi Penal Code, Erbil Police Directorate said in a statement.
“We will transfer these criminals to Baghdad city… we arrested 183 criminals in 2020 who had done different types of crimes such as theft and abduction,” the police officer said, adding that the arrestees were referred to the governorates where were wanted from.
