SULAIMANI – Forty-nine violations have been recorded against journalists and media outlets in the first quarter of 2021 in the Kurdistan Region, Metro Center for Journalists' Rights and Advocacy said on Monday (May 3).
Violations against journalists have decreased by %50 in the last four months compared to the first quarter of 2020, Metro Center said during a press conference.
The violations consisted of 23 cases of banning news coverages, 15 cases of attacks, threats and abuses, 6 cases of confiscating journalists’ equipment and 5 cases of detaining journalists without warrant.
Metro Center called on the Court of Cassation to annul a six-year jail sentence against five Kurdish journalists and activists arrested over charges of “spying.”
In its year-end report, the Metro Center documented nearly 400 violations against journalists and media outlets in the Kurdistan Region in 2020.
The violations included 74 arrests without a warrant, 163 detentions, the shuttering of four offices of broadcasters, and 42 cases of confiscation of journalists’ equipment.
