SULAIMANI – Reporters Organization for Rights and Developments (RORD) on Monday (May 3) condemned banning a journalist team of Zhyan News Network from broadcasting in Erbil during a visit by the Kurdistan Region President to a number of Kurdish political parties.
“We from the reporters organization, reject such behaviors towards reporters and ground teams,” the organization said in a statement.
Preventing journalist teams of Zhyan News Network and other media outlets from doing their work is “violation against freedom of press” in the Kurdistan Region, it added.
The violation against reporters of Zhyan News Network coincides with World Press Freedom Day, a date which celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom: to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.
Metro Center for Journalists' Rights and Advocacy said on Monday (May 3) that 49 violations have been recorded against journalists and media outlets in the first quarter of 2021 in the Kurdistan Region.
In its year-end report, the Metro Center documented nearly 400 violations against journalists and media outlets in the Kurdistan Region in 2020.
