SULAIMANI – Good results were accomplished from investigations launched by the Kurdistan Region Government (KRG) into a rocket attack that targeted coalition forces and others, said Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Thursday (February 25).

During a ceremony marking the official completion of the first section of 150-meter road circling in Erbil, KRG Prime Minister said “we were able to identify” the perpetrators behind the Erbil attack.

In a latest development, Barzani spoke by phone with French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, discussing “the recent terror attack on Erbil and the ongoing investigation.”

“We very much value the strong and longstanding friendship between the peoples of Kurdistan and France –mb,” Barzani said in a post on his official Twitter account.

One civilian contractor and a citizen were killed and eight others were injured in a rocket attack on US-led forces in Erbil on Monday night (February 15).

The barrage of rockets targeted a military air base occupied by the US-led coalition at Erbil International Airport. Wayne Marotto, Spokesman for the US-led Coalition said five other contractors were hurt.

During a press conference, KRG’s Interior Minister said “the incident tells us, that besides Daesh [ISIS] there are other terrorist groups whose activities should be tackled through cooperation between Kurdistan Region, Iraq and the coalition.”

Saraya Awliya al-Dam, a Shi'a militia group with alleged ties to Iran claimed responsibility for the attack, saying they were able to precisely hit the targets with 24 rockets.

The US’s C-RAM counter rocket system and the coalition missiles failed to stop the rockets launched against al-Harir US military base, some 60 km northeast of Erbil, read a statement published on Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF, or Hashd al Shaabi) propaganda channels.
