SULAIMANI - A civil defense policeman was killed when a landmine exploded in Balakayati area in Erbil’s Choman district on Sunday (May 9).

A person relative to the victim told Zhyan News Network that the victim, Shwan Jamal, went to Bardabuk heights to collect spring herbs.

He was survived by a wife and two children, he added.

Landmines and other war remnants are present in the areas border Iran planted during  Iraq-Iran eight-year war. People oftentimes lose lives or wounded because most of the war remnants are unmarked.

On March 4, the Iraqi Kurdistan Mine Action Agency (IKMAA) said that it has cleared 65% of the Kurdistan Region’s territory from explosive devices so far.

Over 13,000 mine explosion victims have been recorded by the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) IKMAA since the 1990s. According to IKMAA there are around 3,000 minefields in the Kurdistan Region.
