SULAIMANI - Head of the Summit Foundation for Refugees and Displaced Affairs Ari Jalal said on Sunday (May 9) that 32 Kurdish tourists have been arrested over the past five days.

The tourists are from the Kurdistan Region who traveled to Egypt on April 16, Jalal said.

“For travel and visiting some cities in Egypt, they were transported by a driver to Alexandra, but to a prohibited area,” he said. “The driver left them there, who were arrested later by the Egyptian border guards.”

Jalal also said that the Egyptian border guards mistook the Kurdish tourists for migrants.

“They are in difficult a condition due to lack of water and food and are detained in the garage of the police.”

The arrestee will be repatriated to the Kurdistan Region on Tuesday, Jalal said noting that the Egyptian authorities decided to release them after a court ruling.
