SDF launches anti-ISIS op in Syria’s Deir Ezzor

SULAIMANI – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) launched a four-day large-scale military and security operation in coordination with the US-led Coalition to clamp down on Islamic State (ISIS) sleeper cells in Wadi al-Ajeej area in Deir Ezzor countryside.
“The campaign is targeting the Daesh sleeper cells and their weapons cache and the dens used by members and leaders of Daesh in the region bordering Iraqi Government,” the SDF said in a statement.
The operation aims to control routes of smuggling weapons and ISIS militants between Syria and Iraq, read the statement, noting the operation was launched on Monday with launching missile attacks by the Coalition forces in conjunction with launching light bombs and intensive flight by reconnaissance planes.
Spokesperson for the US-led Coalition Colonel Wayne Marotto tweeted that
the operation aims “to curb terror activities & bust Daesh smuggling networks for WPNs & terrorist elements. We continue to enabling our SDF partners’ efforts in the fight to Defeat thru air support & ISR missions.”
Marotto also said that
the Coalition will carry on “to defeat Daesh & its remnants. Daesh is territorially defeated but has evolved into an insurgency of hit & run tactics, murder & criminal activity to fund its poisonous ideology.”
ISIS militants are active in Deir Ezzor and intermittently stage armed attack against the security forces and civilians.
On Sunday, the US-Based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that
suspected ISIS militants carried out an attack on a bus carrying a SDF force in al-Kabar village west of Deir al-Ezzor, killing four SDF members and injuring some others.
The SOHR recorded 260 assassinations including seventeen children and eleven women were by armed cells in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, al-Hasakah countryside, al-Raqqah city and countryside, and Manbij area. In addition, 478 SDF fighters, including local leaders, were assassinated in the same areas.
The watchdog has also logged four casualties within the Coalition troops in the areas.
