Fire destroys over 500 acres of land in Sulaimani’s Mawat

SULAIMANI – Sulaimani Environment and Forest Police Directorate said on Wednesday (May 12) that a blaze destroyed 2,000 dunams (494.2 acres) of grassland on Gurdarash mountain in the peripeties of Bargurn village in Sulaimani’s Mawat district.

A forest police detachment rushed to the scene and controlled the fire after hours due to the presence of mines and explosives at the venue, said the police directorate.

“The damage is estimated at 2,000 dunams of burned grassland and natural trees, as well as 20 dunams of people’s burned orchards and groves were also burned,” read the statemement.
The cause of fire was “mysterious,."

Bushfire are rife in the Kurdistan Region during the hot and dry summer.
